iShoot 2 developer diary #1

With Kim Rhode’s Outdoor Shooting out the door, it’s finally time to start work on iShoot 2 in earnest. We’ve been bouncing ideas around for a while, but real work on it didn’t start until two weeks ago.

Obviously with only two weeks of work on it and a brand new engine to get up and running, there isn’t too much working yet. And what is working isn’t ready to be subjected to public scrutiny yet. Still, we’ve gotten a lot done in such a short period of time — we can aim and shoot various cool weapons, and the terrain is in and blowing apart beautifully. Maps are finally bigger than a single screen, and scrolling and pinch zooming across the expansive landscape are working perfectly.

Most exciting to me, though, is the graphical improvements we’re going to have this time around. Here’s a tank from the original iShoot:

In comparison, here is one of the new iShoot 2 tanks when fully zoomed in (ignore the ugly solid blue background, skies aren’t in yet):

Weapons, explosions, the UI, and everything else are all getting the same level of upgrade. On top of the obvious graphical improvements, the engine has some extremely cool tricks up its sleeve that I’m not ready to talk about yet. Stay tuned…

Looking good, Ethan! How come the tank’s gun is so long? Will you have specific tank models? Be pretty cool to have “historical”/”classical” battle scenes with various tanks of that era, etc.!

    Can’t wait!

Also, who is “we”? How many other devs are working on your team now?

This particular tank just has a long barrel. There are lots of different tanks with lots of different designs, ranging from more-or-less realistic WWII designs on up to fanciful futuristic designs. None of them are going to be precisely based on real-world tank models, however.

“We” is me, another programmer (Dave Asbell), and an artist (Lance Kelly). Dave’s been working on the new terrain engine while I’m mainly handling tanks and weapons.

this is AWESOME! love iShoot, still playing it. you should have the option to customize your own tank, like how it looks. or draw your own that’d be pretty sweet but i’m just rambling on with all this excitement. Keep up the good work.

Looks amazing! I’m an avid player of 2.0.2, and I love making weapons. I hope there’ll be some new weapon types to go around in the new version! (Some form of depth charge, an insta-kill laser, etc.)

I really hope there is going to be the bluetooth capability. Theres a lot of people who play this game and at this point its essentials. Good work! Thanks

Any thoughts in how this will work with the iPad? No doubt it would stunning on that massive screen!

I just have one request, and if it is included I would gladly pay 10 bucks for the game granted it is better than ishoot 1

please make this game multiplayer over the internet!!! not just over local wifi…

please make it so you can play your friends over 3g!!!! and have a buddy list of some kind!

other than that i love ishoot and you’re awsome

    Hi Ethan!

My kids and I love iShoot (they’re downstairs running the battery down on my Touch again with it), and I noticed you’ve had incredible success with the app.

I would love to hear more about how you marketed the app – would you mind telling us about how you did it?

    Cheers…

    Hi,

iShoot just started crashing on my iTouch and my kids are really disappointed. When you hit start game it just crashes and leaves the game completely. I upgraded to the new iTouch op system and that didn’t help. What can I do?
